Carol E. Henderson (PhD) is the inaugural Vice Provost for Diversity and Inclusion, Chief Diversity Officer, and Advisor to the President at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Prior to this appointment, Henderson served as the inaugural Vice Provost for Diversity at the University of Delaware, where she was also Professor of English and Africana Studies. The recipient of several community, professional and research awards, including the University of Delaware’s Excellence in Teaching Award, she has been an educator, teacher, and scholar for over twenty-four years. The author/editor of four books, and numerous essays in critical volumes and journals, she has also been the special issue editor for three journals: the Society of the Multi-Ethnic Literature of the United States (MELUS), Middle Atlantic Writers Association (MAWA), and the most recent being a special issue for the Journal of American Culture on Visions of Black Womanhood in American culture (March 2019), where her most recent publication includes the introduction to this special issue, “On First Ladies, Duchesses, and Bawses—Black Womanhood Rebooted.” She has a forthcoming article, “All Eyez on Me: On Being Black, Female, and a First-Gen Leader in the Academy” in a special issue of Palimpsest on Black Women, leadership, and academic service. She is currently at work on an article that examines James Baldwin’s influence on writers Ta-Nehisi Coates and Jesmyn Ward, and a book project, Searching for Emmett and the Four Little Girls: The Black Child Body in African American and American Culture. Henderson previously served as associate director/director of undergraduate studies of then Black American Studies (now Africana Studies) at the University of Delaware from 2007-2010 and became the first chair of the department of Black American Studies 2010- 2014. Henderson received her undergraduate degree in Political Science from the University of California, Los Angeles, her Master of Arts in English from California State University, Dominguez Hills, and her doctorate from the University of California, Riverside.
